SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Saturday underscored the pivotal significance of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s participation in the ongoing Commemorative Summit marking the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, slated for December 15-18 in Tokyo, Japan.

“President Marcos’s presence at this landmark event is a powerful symbol of the Philippines’ unwavering commitment to strengthening its ties with Japan and further elevating our collective partnership within the ASEAN bloc,” Speaker Romualdez declared.

“This golden anniversary presents a unique opportunity to not only celebrate past achievements but also chart a brighter, more prosperous future for our region,” added Romualdez, leader of the 300-plus strong House of Representatives.

Romualdez, who is part of President Marcos’ official delegation to the Tokyo summit, expressed optimism that President Marcos will play a key role in advancing crucial discussions on key regional issues, including enhanced Japan-Philippines economic cooperation.

He noted that President Marcos’ focus on infrastructure development, renewable energy, and digital transformation aligns perfectly with Japan’s expertise and strategic investments in the region.

The summit also provides an opportunity to promote enhanced maritime and security cooperation between the Philippines and Japan, especially in fostering regional stability and addressing maritime challenges our country is facing in the West Philippine Sea, according to Romualdez.

Citing the success of programs like the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Program, Romualdez said the summit presents an ideal platform to strengthen people-to-people linkages and cultural exchange between ASEAN and Japan.

“Our shared history, cultural ties, and common aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous region form a strong foundation for this partnership,” Speaker Romualdez emphasized.

“President Marcos’s presence at the summit signifies the Philippines’ readiness to actively engage in charting a path towards a more vibrant and united ASEAN-Japan community.”

He expressed confidence that the President’s insightful vision and unwavering commitment to regional cooperation will pave the way for concrete initiatives and impactful agreements during the summit, benefiting not only the Philippines and Japan but all member states of ASEAN.

“This golden anniversary summit carries immense potential to redefine the ASEAN-Japan relationship and usher in a new era of progress and prosperity for all. With President Marcos at the helm, we are confident that the Philippines will play a central role in making this vision a reality,” Speaker Romualdez concluded.

In his departure speech, President Marcos said that would reassure ASEAN Member States and Japan that as permanent country coordinator for ASEAN-Japan Economic Relations, the Philippines will always continue to shepherd ASEAN initiatives and projects with Japan.
