SOUND AND FURY

A lawmaker advised Vice President Sara Duterte to just focus on her responsibility to the Filipino people instead of making repeated ranting and supposed obvious self-entitled pronouncements on governance matters.

Duterte suddenly became critical of the administration of her erstwhile ally, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr.

“Why are we hearing all these only now? It only shows what kind of politician she is. She will make it appear that she’s an ally if it will only suit her interests, then attack when she no longer needs the use for it. She has just shown her true colors,” House Assistant Majority Leader and Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Jil Bongalon said.

Bongalon also noted that the former mayor of Davao City had been “silent” on problems surrounding the Department of Education for the past two years since she took over its helm, but surprisingly, she made a litany only after she resigned.

“Did she even help our overburdened and overworked public school teachers? At one point, I can still vividly recall that she suggested holding Saturday classes only to catch up with the targeted June school calendar opening, which President Marcos politely declined,” he said.

Bongalon reminded Duterte that all these sour-grape issues of Duterte are “counter-productive” when DepEd problems could have been partially addressed if not solved totally during her reign, considering that she has been enjoying massive popularity ratings.

“Show some humility, Ms. VP! Your complaints could have been addressed, and they could have resulted in more productive endeavors if you had raised them early on. Don’t make the government your punching bag,” he said.

“The hands of public school teachers are full; the last thing they need is an additional burden on their shoulders,” Bongalon added.

“Don’t be ungrateful to the government, Madam VP. Anyway, it’s the government – whose lifeblood (taxes) is sourced from taxpayers’ hard-earned money – that has been responsible for paying the salaries of your nearly 400 bodyguards,” he said with sarcasm.

Two members of the House of Representatives described the series of negative criticisms of Vice President Sara Duterte against the Marcos administration as “playing politics.”

Two leaders of the Young Guns in the House of Representatives, La Union Rep. Paolo Ortega V and Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong, who both said VP Duterte should back up her criticisms with concrete solutions.

“If Vice President Sara Duterte will be critical to the national government, she must also offer alternative solutions and show that she is rendering service outside of her official function as vice president,” the two solons said.

“Sana may ma-offer ka rin na counter na plano at saka syempre may ma-offer ka na serbisyo besides sa official na function mo,” Ortega said at the media briefing.

Adiong said VP Duterte should keep her criticisms constructive, saying “Mas maganda constructive yung criticism mo. Lahat naman tayo, we are working in the same government, working for the same constituency – mga Pilipino.”

“We hope that any critique or any statement nya na sa palagay nya ay mali sa gobyerno, since hindi naman po siya opposition … dapat mag-provide siya or mag-offer siya ng other possible solutions o alternative ways para maibsan o mapaganda ang serbisyo ng administrasyon na ito,” Adiong noted.
