Sorsogon clash leaves rebel leader, member dead

A GUNBATTLE between patrolling security troops and a band of heavily-armed New People’s Army guerrillas in Irosin, Sorsogon on Friday left two rebels dead, Police Regional Office 5 director Brig. Gen. Jonnel Estomo said.

In a report to Philippine National Police chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, the official said that the clash took place at the boundary of barangays Patag and Cawayan in Irosin municipality around 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

Members of the Sorsogon Police Provincial Office and the Army’s 903rd Brigade were conducting a combat operation in the area when they encountered around 40 NPA gunmen led by “Ka Cennon/Tikong.”

The ensuing firefight resulted in the killing of “Ka Cennon/Tikong,” whose real identity was Recto Golimlim, the commanding officer of the local NPA unit. and “Ka Jay-R.”

Golimlim is one of the most wanted persons in the Bicol region, with P5 million in bounty for his capture.

Recovered from the slain suspects were two chamber-loaded M-16 automatic rifles.
