PARIS— Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio are to set foot in the hallowed grounds of Roland Garros to pursue their dreams and help sustain the searing drive of Team Philippines for greater Paris Games success.

Boxing action moves from North Paris Arena to the iconic Paris sports complex for the medal rounds starting Tuesday.

Villegas will be the first to be ushered in and have her warmups in the lockers Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have called their own.

The Tacloban pug fights Turkish Buse Naz Cakiroglu in a 50kg semifinal bout at around 10 p.m. here Tuesday (early Wednesday morning in Manila), with the winner advancing to the gold-medal fight either opposite Wu Yu of China or Kazakh Nazym Kyzaibay.

Then Petecio takes her turn for a Garros gig Wednesday night, duking it out with Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in a 57kg semis showdown.

In the other side of the semis are top seed Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yu Ting and Turkey’s Esra Yildiz Kahraman.

Olympic neophyte Villegas tries to bring her Cinderella ride all the way to the fight for the gold as Petecio goes for a second Olympic final where he hopes to finally land on top.

The prospect of Philippine victory celebration in Garros looks bright.

Recent modernization of the facilities — namely the addition of a roof to Court Philippe-Chatrier — has made hosting of Olympic boxing possible.

Earlier, Garros was a familiar territory for tennis — the Olympic tennis competition where Djokovic took the men’s singles crown to complete a super grand slam, counting his victories in Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open, US Open and the Olympics.

Meanwhile, World No. 2 EJ Obiena will leave everything in Monday night’s pole vault final to contribute to the country’s Olympic medal haul.

With everything hanging in the balance, Obiena let out a loud roar out of relief as he surpassed 5.70m after back-to-back fouls at 5.60m to open his medal bid on Saturday.

After clearing 5.75 m, world No. 2 Obiena’s effort was just enough to secure a top 12 spot and a second consecutive Olympic final appearance. He will have a big chance to improve his 11th place finish in Tokyo three years ago.

“Going to my second Olympic final,” Obiena wrote on his social media accounts with an fistbump emoji on it.

“Sorry po sa mga napakaba ko kanina. Ako rin po kinabahan ng todo ng di ko maintindihan.

“Thank you for everyone who sticked thru the emotional rollercoaster,” he added.

The pole vault final is set at 7 p.m. on Monday (1 a.m. early Tuesday morning Philippine time) at the Stade de France.

World champion Mondo Duplantis of Sweden and Sam Kendricks of the United States are among the top guns in the final.

Also, Filipino hurdler John Cabang Tolentino was relegated to the repechage, after placing sixth in Heat 1 of the men’s 110m hurdles with a time of 13.66 seconds to miss an outright semifinal berth.

The repechage will be on Tuesday at 10:50 a.m. (4:50 p. m. Philippine time) for one final shot at reaching the semis.
