WHAT is needed for corrupt public servants, particularly elective national and local government officials, to continue victimizing the beleaguered, helpless and suffering people?

It is for the Filipinos, through the millions of registered voters across the country, to elect these modern-day vampires during an election, which is participatory democracy in action.

In fact, well-meaning people said that electing moneyed but unscrupolous candidates would only open this Third World nation of more than 100 million people to more problems.

With so many people now in the grip of grinding poverty due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, allowing these “evils” to stay in the government is totally wrong.

“Huwag nating kalimutan na makapangyarihan ang taumbayan. Kayang-kaya niyang alisin ang isang tiwaling lingkod-bayan sa pamamagitan ng balota,” said a long-time voter.

That’s why we cannot overemphasize the importance of exercising our right of suffrage during elections, which are held every the three years in the country.

And this early, the country’s greatest “political show,” which is an election, is now on with the start of the filing of certificate of candidacy (COC) for the May 9, 2022 balloting.

As decreed by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), which is mandated to ensure the holding of clean, honest and orderly polls, the filing of COCs runs from October 1 to 8.

The official campaign period starts on Feb. 8, 2022 for national candidates. Those seeking local posts may campaign starting March 25, which is 45 days before election day.

In reality, however, many prospective candidates, mostly local politicians, have been using the crippling health crisis to win the hearts and minds of the Filipino electorate.

Sa pamamagitan ng pamimigay ng ayuda sa mga nahihirapang taumbayan, lalo na ang mga botante.
