SENATE President Francis “Chiz” Escudero reaffirmed that the Senate will not be influenced by political pressure as it prepares for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

He emphasized that fairness and due process will guide the proceedings.

“Baliwala sa akin ang anumang opinion o suhestiyon o pag tulak ng mga partisano pabor o kontra kay VP Sara,” Escudero stated saying that they must remain apolitical.

He also called on senators to avoid making prejudicial statements ahead of the trial.

“Fairness dictates nothing less. Wala pang nakikitang ebidensya laban o pabor kay VP Sara para kami ay magsalita na kami ay mag-a-acquit o kami ay magco-convict,” he cautioned.

With the Senate set to resume on June 2, Escudero assured that the impeachment trial will proceed according to constitutional procedures, despite ongoing political and legal challenges.

Vice President Duterte has challenged the impeachment process before the Supreme Court, seeking to halt the proceedings. Other legal petitions have also been filed, including calls to compel the Senate to convene as an impeachment court immediately.

Escudero said these legal actions would help clarify constitutional issues before the trial begins.

“Marahil providential na hindi kami natuloy sa trial dahil nag-recess kami para lahat ng mga bagay na ito ay maidulog na sa Korte Suprema, mapagpasyahan na ng Korte Suprema para wala ng pipigil o aantala pa sa trial,” he noted.

Despite these challenges, Escudero reiterated that the Senate will fulfill its constitutional duty unless a restraining order is issued.
