DESPITE the support of major political groups, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is running as an independent candidate.

Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) spokesperson Anthony del Rosarion, in a virtual presser, said Mayor Sara is not joining any political groups and will remain in the HNP.

HNP, a regional party chaired by Mayor Sara, was formed in 2019 for the senatorial and local elections by influential and powerful politicians from the Davao region.

However, the HNP is in talks with least five major political teams for a possible coalition — Lakas-CMD, Nacionalista Party (NP), National Unity Party (NUP), Partido ng Masang Pilipino, and People’s Reform Movement.

“Sinabi na niya noon pa, she is not joining any party, in case she decides to run for president, she will be an independent candidate,” Del Rosario said.

The HNP welcomed the latest Pulse Asia survey showing Mayor Sara leading the presidential race with 28 percent.

“Of course, we are very grateful. Maganda ang showing niya sa survey,” Del Rosario said.

But according to Del Rosario, the survey is not just the factor being considered by Mayor Sara in joining the 2022 polls.

Mayor Sara will continue to consult her supporters, not just in Davao region but in other parts of the country.

As of press time, the presidential daughter is in Zamboanga to meet local officials on the public’s sentiments.

Last week, she was in Cebu and met Gov. Gwen Garcia.

It was in Cebu where she confirmed she is “seriously considering” to run as president in 2022.
