LAKAS-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) vice presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte on Wednesday lauded SAGIP party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta’s Magna Carta for the Poor that aims to uplift the standard of living and quality of life of the poor by providing them with sustained opportunities for growth and development.

“Thank you dahil isinulong niyo po ang Magna Carta of the Poor. Importante ito dahil maraming naghihirap na mga kababayan natin lalong lalo na nitong pandemic. This will be a legacy of the SAGIP partylist,” Duterte said during the “Sara All For You” online talk show.

Marcoleta, who is running for senator in this year’s election, said it took him two presidential administrations before it was signed into law.

The Magna Carta for the Poor was first passed in 2013 but was vetoed by then President Benigno Aquino.

It was signed into law by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on April 12, 2019.

“Mahirap at mahaba ang laban na umabot tayo ng 20 years hanggang sa panahon ni PRRD, doon pa napirmahan ang Magna Carta of the Poor. Ito siguro ‘yung matatawag nating landmark legislation kung ang pag-uusapan ay yung ating pagsisikap na maaalalayan ang ating mahihirap na mga kababayan,” Marcoleta said, citing his 20 years in public service and tremendous efforts to get the bill passed.

The implementing rules and regulations of the Magna Carta of the Poor, he said, is already underway.

“Kapag ‘yan ay naitatag na, inaasahan po natin na mai-institutionalize na ang paggalang sa karapatan ng mga kababyaan nating mahihirap,” he added.

Duterte hailed Marcoleta’s contributions for the poor and his desire for continuity of the good things established by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s administration.

“Thank you po dahil you are a believer of continuity. ‘Yung mga magagandang nagawa ay dapat tutukan at ipagpatuloy, and we look forward to the full implementation of the Magna Carta of the Poor,” Duterte said.
