THE suggestion to tap nuclear power as a solution to a local energy crisis is not new to Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) vice presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.

In an ambush interview Friday in Navotas City, Duterte asked if she supported the move of her father, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, to study for viability of harnessing nuclear energy amid skyrocketing fuel prices.

“Opo ma’am (lady reporter) noong mayor ako. 2010, na nagkaka-problema po tayo, mayroon pong energy crisis doon sa Mindanao, as a regional development council chairperson, isa po ‘yan (nuclear energy) talaga sa sinuggest ko sa national government na gawin nila,” Mayor Duterte, Lakas-CMD chairperson, said in response to the question of a lady reporter.

Back in 2010, Mindanao–the Dutertes’ home region–was always strapped for power reserves, which led to rotating brownouts.

According to Mayor Duterte, nuclear energy presents the “fastest solution” to domestic problems concerning power. It’s also obvious step that government needs to take if it wants to host and industrial boom.

“Ang pangangailangan will really depend on studies na gagawin po ng ating Department of Energy (DoE) pero as a suggestion na papunta dyan ‘yung direction natin especially if you want industrialization dito sa ating bansa and we want more investments na pumasok at maraming mag-negosyo dito, syempre tataas po ‘yung pangangailangan natin sa energy,” the lady vice presidential candidate said.

“Yan po ang isa sa mga pinakamabilis na pagbibigay ng solusyon,” Mayor Duterte added.

It was report that President Duterte signed late last month Executive Order (EO) No. 164, which sets up the possibility of using nuclear energy as an alternative power source.
