UNITEAM vice presidential aspirant Sara Duterte has underscored the importance of engaging the youth sector in building a better future and a stronger nation.

In her recent speech during a youth congress in Lucena City, Duterte said the youth should be consulted about issues, policies and decisions that directly impact their sector.

“Ang kinabukasan ang pinag-uusapan natin dito at hindi kami ‘yon. Ang kinabukasan ay kayo ‘yon,” Duterte, Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) Chairperson, told the crowd.

Duterte said young Filipinos should actively participate in conversations concerning their sector — such as teenage pregnancies, illegal drugs, mental health, and even sexually transmitted infections such as HIV.

She noted that it is also best that these issues are openly discussed at home as she also urged parents to create an environment where the voice of their children is heard and their ideas are valued.

Government policymakers, she said, also need to work closely with the youth to come up with programs that effectively address their needs and their future.

“Dapat bukas tayo sa pakikipag-usap sa lahat ng issues and challenges sa kahit anong edad para naiintindihan ninyo kung ano ‘yung dapat gawin at nagkakaisa tayo sa isang direksyon — which is what? We want to see a better country. We want to see a better Philippines,” she said.
