A MEMBER of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, accused of “extortion” is now in jail after being arrested in an entrapment operation conducted by local Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) officers, PNP-CIDG Director Major General Eliseo DC Cruz said yesterday.

A Fire Officer 1 member of the Guiuan Fire Station in Eastern Samar was arrested while receiving the P51,000 “boodle” money topped by a marked P1,000 from a BFP applicant, said the official.

Maj. Gen. Cruz said that the sting was conducted by members of the CIDG Regional Field Unit 8 inside the Robinsons Place in Marasbaras, Tacloban City, last Saturday.

Apart from the marked money, the suspect also yielded a mobile phone she used in transacting with the complainant.

The female complainant told the local CIDG that the accused promised her “quick” entry into the BFP if she could produce P150,000.

The woman said she initially deposited P60,000 via GCash under the account name “Karla R.”

When BFP Region 8 Superintendent Doroteo Mocorro learned of the extortion incident, he immediately sought the assistance of the CIDG in investigating the matter and in launching the entrapment operation, which led to the arrest of the accused.

The BFP officer is now facing charges for extortion and violation of Republic Act 9485 or the Anti-Red Tape Act, said the PNP-CIDG director.

“May this serve as a renewed warning to all government employees and other public officials who continue to engage in illicit activities amid our government’s desire to end corruption in all our offices and agencies,” Maj. Gen. Cruz said.
