S. Mindanao cops net 6 wanted ex-NPAs

POLICE Regional Office 11 (PRO 11) Director Brigadier General Benjamin H. Silo Jr. on Friday announced the capture of six former New People’s Army (NPA) members wanted for a string of criminal offenses in Southern Mindanao.

“We have accounted for another group of ex-NPA rebels, all high-risk personalities who are facing warrants for different charges in line with our ongoing legal offensive against the CPP/NPA/NDF (Communist Party of the Philippines/New People’s Army/National Democratic Front) as ordered by Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, General Rodolfo S. Azurin Jr.,” the PRO11 director said.

Silo said that one of the suspects, a former member of the CPP/NPA Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC), was arrested in Barangay Cabinuangan in New Bataan, Davao de Oro, last Tuesday.

Judge Angelita Alfonso Tumanda of the Mati City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 5 recommended no bail for the temporary liberty of the suspect, who is facing a case for kidnapping with serious illegal detention.

The suspect is now under the custody of the Army’s 66th Infantry Battalion (IB).

The 2nd, identified with the alias “Tanya/Chona,” a former CPP/NPA SMRC physical instructor, was arrested in Sitio Magay in Bgy. Don Martin Marundan in Mati City, Davao Oriental at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.

A resident of Loreto, Agusan del Sur, the suspect is the subject of a warrant for attempted murder with a P200,000 bail recommended by Judge Emilio Dayanghirang III of the Lupon, Davao Oriental RTC Br. 32. He is now under the custody of the Army’s 701st Brigade.

Silo said that the 3rd former rebel with the alias “Ka Jeric” was arrested for an attempted murder case last Wednesday.

The 25-year-old resident of Bgy. Panalum was ordered arrested by Judge Ronald Tolentino of the Davao City RTC Br. 52 on October 16, 2020. The court recommended a P120,000 bail for his temporary liberty.

The 4th ex-NPA, a resident of Bgy. Paradise Embac in Paquibato District was arrested based on a warrant for attempted murder issued by Judge Ridgway Tanjili of the Davao City RTC Br. 15 on August 28, 2012.

A P40,000 bail was recommended for the suspect’s temporary liberty.

Another former rebel, a resident of Bgy. Poblacion in Banay-Banay, Davao Oriental, was arrested last Wednesday in Sitio Barol near Bgy. Corporacion.

Silo said that Judge Tumanda recommended no bail for the temporary freedom of the accused.

The 6th, identified as Marlon Libuasan, a former commander of the NPA’s Front Committee 20, was arrested in Sitio Cagumay in Bgy. Maglahos in Cateel, Davao Oriental.

Judge Sharon Rose Saracin of the Baganga, Davao Oriental RTC Br. 7 recommended no bail for the temporary liberty of the accused in connection with a case for violation of Republic Act 8353 or the expanded law on rape.

Silo said that the suspect is now under the custody of the Boston Municipal Police Station.
