Russ sub sighting alarms 3 senators
THREE senators expressed their concerns and recommendations following the reported sighting of a Russian Ufa attack submarine off the coast of Occidental Mindoro, emphasizing the importance of vigilance, maritime security, and diplomatic action to address the incident.
Senator Francis “Tol” Tolentino, Chair of the Senate Special Committee on Philippine Maritime and Admiralty Zones, commended the Philippine Navy for its swift response. “I laud the immediate action undertaken by the Philippine Navy when it dispatched an aircraft and warship to respond to the sighting of a Russian Ufa attack submarine,” Tolentino said. He highlighted the Navy’s successful tracking of the vessel until it left Philippine waters.
Tolentino also underscored the importance of the recent enactment of the Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act (RA 12065) and the Philippine Maritime Zones Act (RA 12064), which he authored. He called on the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to continue informing the international community about the Philippines’ efforts to assert its claims and jurisdiction over its maritime zones and territorial waters.
Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada similarly raised concerns about the potential risks to regional stability and security.
“The presence of foreign military assets, especially those with offensive capabilities, increases the risk of misunderstandings and conflicts in an already sensitive region,” Estrada said, urging the Department of National Defense, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and DFA to clarify the intentions behind what he described as an “incursion.”
Senator Joel Villanueva stressed the need for vigilance and proactive defense of Philippine maritime interests. “The reported presence of a Russian submarine in the West Philippine Sea is truly concerning. This underscores the need for heightened vigilance in safeguarding our territorial waters,” Villanueva said. He praised the Philippine Coast Guard and Navy for their dedication and emphasized the role of the recently passed maritime laws in protecting the country’s sovereignty.
The incident has prompted renewed calls for strengthened maritime defense, united national action, and diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region. As investigations and diplomatic inquiries continue, government agencies are expected to provide further updates on measures taken to address the situation.
