RTU is overall champ
TAGAYTAY City — Rizal Technological University-Boni asserted its mastery to emerge as the overall champion in the Philippine Army unit with 42 golds, 18 silvers and seven bronzes in the 2nd Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Games Luzon NCR Leg held in Indang, Cavite.
The gold medal haul by RTU cadets came mostly in arnis, taekwondo, boxing, athletics, and swimming.
In the swimming competition, RTU-Boni swimmer Alvin Marticion claimed six gold medals in the boys’ 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 200m Individual Medley, 200m relay, and 200m freestyle relay events.
The Top Five in the Army bracket included the University of Baguio (9-5-1), Polytechnic University of the Philippines (6-8-6), Central Bicol State University of Agriculture-Pili (4-6-3), and Don Honorio Ventura University (4-5-3).
“Very, very successful itong ROTC Luzon leg natin. This is the biggest qualifying leg ng ROTC Games,” said Sen. Francis Tolentino, the “Father of the ROTC Games.”
De La Salle University-Manila dominated the Philippine Navy unit by collecting 27 gold, 7 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
Highlighting the Green Archers’ performance were swimmers Kirk Dominique Reyes and Janelle Kyla Chua, who secured five gold medals each.
La Salle was followed by the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (19-15-26), Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (12-13-8), Manuel Enverga University Foundation (8-13-3), and Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (7-4-1).
Meanwhile, the Philippine State College of Aeronautics led in the Philippine Air Force unit with 22 golds, 17 silvers, and 12 bronzes, followed by the Philippine State College of Aeronautics-FAB (19-17-15), Fullbright College (11-5-5), Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Lipa (8-5-4), and PATTS College of Aeronautics (6-1-3).
The gold and silver medalists in 14 sports events will compete in the National Finals of the ROTC Games, which are supported by the Department of National Defense, Commission on Higher Education, and Philippine Sports Commission.
“Medyo konti na yon kasi yun na lang mga nanalo, nanalo sa visayas sa luzon o mindanao so mas maganda na ito lalo sa combat sports,” added Sen. Tolentino
A total of 77 colleges and universities participated in the Luzon Leg, including 45 in the Army unit and 16 each in the Navy and Air Force units.
The 2nd ROTC Games National Championships are scheduled on Aug.18-24 in Indang, Cavite.
