THE House of Representatives, led by Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, has expressed deep sadness on the passing of Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman.

In a statement, Romualdez paid tribute to Lagman, one of the leaders of the opposition bloc in the House of Representatives recognizing his contributions in making meaningful bills and laws.

Despite being on different affiliation, Romualdez said Lagman is more than a colleague, a passionate and fearless legislator whose presence in the House of Representatives commanded respect.

“Cong. Edcel was known for his sharp intellect, unwavering principles, and deep commitment to the causes he believed in. Whether one agreed with him or not, no one could deny his dedication to his work and his tireless advocacy for human rights, good governance and social justice. His voice—always firm, always eloquent—pushed important debates forward and challenged us all to think more critically and act more decisively,” Romualdez said.

“His absence leaves a great void, not just in Congress but in Philippine public service. On behalf of the House of Representatives, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues in the Liberal Party. May they find comfort in knowing that Cong. Edcel’s legacy of service and integrity will endure,” Romualdez added.

On January 30, the family of Lagman announced his death. He was 82.

According to Tabaco City Mayor Krisel Lagman, the lawmaker suffered cardiac arrest.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Albay First District Representative and Liberal Party President Edcel C. Lagman,” the lawmaker’s daughter said.

“He came into this world on 01 May 1942 and left it for a better place on 30 January 2025 at exactly 5:01 in the afternoon due to cardiac arrest,” she added.
