Itchie CabayanMY condolences to the family of former National Press Club President and Hataw newspaper publisher Jerry Yap, whose demise yesterday came as a shock to many whose lives he touched.

Don Jerry, as we fondly called him, was a loyal friend to the end. He stood by the late Mayor Fred Lim up until the latter’s passing due to COVID. He was as saddened as we all were.

His most recent posts were of him and Mayor Isko Moreno, with a call for his FB friends to support the mayor’s presidential bid. Don Jerry had his daughter’s wedding solemnized by Mayor Isko, the same with his just a few months back.

Despite his life status and being the owner of a newspaper, Don Jerry never gloated about it. He remained humble, soft-spoken and kept an eye level type of relationship with his editors, reporters and photographers. His staff Bong Son and Brian Bilasano said Don Jerry was never the bossy type who threw his weight around.

To his Hataw family, deepest condolences too. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

A Filipina who claims to have lived as a battered wife in the hands of her American ex-husband has received justice.

Reuben Henry Hartfield, 61, was arrested on Tuesday in Tanauan City, Batangas. He is said to be an overstaying American who was accused of being an undesirable alien by his alleged battered Filipina common-law wife.

The American was arrested at the Tanauan municipal trial court building after attending a hearing on a case that was filed against him by his former common-law partner who was not named upon requeset.

A similar complaint for undesirability was filed by the victim against Hartfield which led to his subsequent arrest and possible deportation.

The deportation complaint against the American stemmed from the charge of violating Republic Act 9262, or the Anti-Violence against Women and Children Act (VAWC), which his estranged Filipina partner filed against him before the Tanauan court.

The man is presently detained in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City pending conduct of deportation proceedings.
