To ease flooding in Metro Manila

FORMER senator Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. called on the government to consider reviving the spillway project to ease the extreme flooding Metro Manila is experiencing during typhoon season.

Marcos is referring to the halted construction of a spillway project in Parañaque aimed to serve as a catch basin of overflowing flood water from Laguna Lake before exiting to Manila Bay.

The Parañaque spillway was one of the four floodway projects proposed by his father but were discontinued by the next administration.

In his Facebook page, Bongbong said the 1970 extreme flooding in metro manila prompted the then Marcos government to plan the construction of four major floodways to accommodate all the water to avoid spilling to low lying areas.

The former senator pointed out that the urban planning envisioned by his father was the building of four floodways as a long term solution to flooding in Metro Manila with expert urban planner Jun Palafox at its helm.
