IT was a record-setting afternoon in the Premier Volleyball League.

Russian Marina Tushova became the league’s new all-time record holder for most points scored with 45, including the dramatic match winner at the backrow that carried Capital1 past Choco Mucho, 13-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-13, yesterday at the Philsports Arena.

Tushova erased the old mark of 44 points set by Dominican Republic’s Prisilla Rivera in Akari’s 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12 over Choco Mucho on Nov. 3, 2022.

Cignal set a new mark for the least number of errors of in a match in a 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 romp of Reinforced Conference holders PetroGazz.

The HD Spikers, who logged only six errors, also matched their finest start in club history of 4-0 set in the 2022 Invitational and Open Conferences.

Now with 12 points, Cignal is already assured of being the one of the top three teams will compete against the bottom three sides in Pool A for spots in the quarterfinals.

With two victories in four matches, the Solar Spikers have already surpassed their one-win output in the All-Filipino Conference and now sit in solo third in Pool B.

“Thanks, ate Iris (Tolenada). She did a great job,” said Tushova, who tallied 43-of-109 kills that went along with 18 receptions and 12 digs.

Tolenada, one of key Capital1’s key signees during the conference break, tossed 17 excellent sets and scored five points, and more importantly her leadership on floor.

“Give it to Marina, no one else. If it’s outside, so be it,” said Solar Spikers coach Roger Gorayeb on Tolenada. “Iris is the extension inside the court.”

Coach Shaq delos Santos was pleased the way the HD Spikers performed in the one-hour, 46-minute match.

Cignal surpassed the old PVL mark of seven errors recorded by Creamline in a 25-7, 25-10, 25-11 win over Akari-Adamson in the Open Conference on Nov. 11, 2018.

“Seryoso ba?” said a shocked Delos Santos, after learning that his squad gave up only six points on errors. “Sobrang proud ako kasi yun talaga yung isa sa goal namin.

“Actually every training, kasi kailangang maging quality talaga ang maging performance. So good thing, na-execute namin at nai-apply namin in today’s game and hopefully ma-maintain namin iyan. Kasi bihira lang sa amin iyan.

“Congratulations sa amin kasi ako being the head coach ng team, sobrang happy ako sa performance. Kasi siyempre, iyon ang isa sa gusto naming makita na galaw ng team. Kung gaano nila kontrolin ang errors,” he added.

The HD Spikers’ lone error in the first set was MJ Perez’s service fault before logging two and three in the second and third, respectively.

Perez had a solid outing of 20 points, including three blocks, seven digs and seven receptions, while Jackie Acuña, who turned 24 last Sunday, also had three blocks for a eight-point outing. Libero Judith Abil collected 14 digs.

The Angels, who were led by Brooke Van Sickle’s 28-point, 10-reception, nine-dig effort, have lost three in a row after winning their opener to tie the Flying Titans, now also at 1-3 outside the top three range.

Greek Zoi Faki led the Flying Titans with 28 points while Dindin Manabat added 16 points, including two service aces.
