QC honors 33 groups with best green, resilient initiatives

A TOTAL of 33 out of the 160 entries from barangays, schools, hospitals, businesses, Sangguniang Kabataan and youth-based organizations were recognized in the 2024 Quezon City Green Awards.

Each participant showcased their different innovations that complemented the green and environment-friendly approach which plays a crucial role in mitigating and adapting to the inevitable effects of climate change.

QC Mayor Joy Belmonte said that this year’s awardees made good of defining the theme with their respective innovations from urban farms to fostering community resilience.

“Ang partisipasyon ng barangays, businesses, schools, hospitals, youth groups, at Sangguniang Kabataan sa QC Green Awards ay patunay na bawat indibidwal at institusyon ay may kakayahang lumikha ng makabuluhang pagbabago. Sa mga programang nakatuon sa pangangalaga sa kalikasan at kahandaan sa sakuna, ipinapakita ninyo na ang bawat aksyon ay nagdudulot ng malaking epekto sa inyong komunidad, sa ating lungsod, at sa ating planeta,” she said.

Green Award recognizes institutions that have made significant contributions in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable practices.

Among the barangays feted were San Antonio for their SANA OIL (sustainable and oil waste management initiative); Barangay Commonwealth’s ResKyusi Food Basket Program; Barangay Batasan Hills for Juan Batasan.

Others are the Robinsons Novaliches’s Recycling Market; Maynilad Water Services, Inc. for installing two 1-Megawatt Solar Farm at the La Mesa Compound and Eastwood City’s My Home, My Responsibility initiative.

For the schools were the St. Theresa’s College of Quezon City for their SINOP Program; New Era High School’s Plastic-free Mondays; Commonwealth High School for their Gulayan sa Paaralan.

Dr. Montano Ramos General Hospital’s Clean and Sustainable Energy for the Future; Capitol Medical Center for their Capitol Cares: Save Energy for a Sustainable Future; Lung Center of the Philippines for the utilization of solar panels; V. Luna Medical Center for their Halamanan sa Bakuran ng DMHBS.

Batasan Youth Leaders Coalition’s PAPEL-LIKHASAN: Likhang Papel mula sa Kalikasan; Youth Environmental Sustainability Organization for their Project WAYSTE: Transforming Waste in Different Ways; SK Payatas’s RETASO: REcycling Textiles towArds Sustainable Opportunities and SK Culiat for their Bote ang Pag-asa ng Kabataan | Imprenta sa Basura.

The Resilience Category, on the other hand, honors initiatives that demonstrate resiliency, preparedness, and response in the face of natural or man-made disasters.

Recipients of the resilience award were Jose P. Laurel Sr. High School for their PROJECT L.I.G.T.A.S. (Laurel’s Innovation in Gaining Tactics on the Ability to Save Lives and Safety of the School); Camp Crame High School’s Resiliency For All: A Project On Emergency Preparedness; Barangay Batasan Hills’ BATASAN is ReADY (Resilient And Disaster prepared for You).

SM Prime Holdings (SM City – Novaliches) and AyalaLand Offices were also recognized for their Resilient Water Solutions: Rainwater Harvesting Planter Tanks for Climate Adaptation and rain garden development with solar-powered irrigation and aerator system.

Belmonte said that winners each received cash grants that they could use for their green and resilient program implementation and development.
