A SECOND YEAR cadet of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) on Thursday died after reportedly receiving heavy punches in the stomach.

The culprit: his upperclassman who is now undergoing a criminal and administrative investigation.

Cadet 3rd Class George Carl Magsayo, a 21-year- old native of Pagadian City, died while being taken to a local hospital, the PNPA leadership said.

An initial investigation showed that at around 5:40 p.m. Thursday, Magsayo and an unnamed classmate reportedly went to the room of the suspect, Cadet 2nd Class Steve Caesar Maingat.

Inside, the accused reportedly cautioned his two underclassmen but later went on to punch the victim at least five times in the stomach.

The heavy punches caused the victim to lose consciousness. Other PNPA personnel rushed Magsayo to the hospital, where an attending physician declared him dead upon arrival at 6:43 a.m. on the same day.

“It is with deep sorrow that we confirm the sudden demise of Cdt 3C George Karl Magsayo,” the PNPA administration said in a statement.

“An extensive investigation is being conducted to ferret out the truth about what happened that led to this tragic but isolated incident while the body of Cdt Magsayo is subject to an autopsy to determine the cause of death. We would like to assure everyone, especially the family that we will make anyone accountable should the findings so warrant and give justice to whom it is due,” it added.

The PNPA headed by Maj. Gen. Rhoderick Armamento said it maintains a strict “No To Hazing Policy” in adherence to the values of respect for human life and rights, which are inculcated among their cadets and personnel.

“We express our sincerest condolences to the family of the late Cdt 3C Magsayo and pray that God comfort us all following this tragedy,” Armamento said.
