THE House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading the proposal that will extend assistance that the government can provide to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who need legal assistance.

A total of 246 congressmen have voted in favor of House Bill 9035 which aims to increase the number of OFWs who benefit from the Legal Assistance Fund (LAF) and the Immediate Protection and Relief for OFWs in Need (ACTION) Fund.

According to House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, as heroes of the modern era, it is only reasonable for the government to help the OFWs, who have a big contribution to the country.

“Hindi dapat pabayaan ang mga OFW na malaki ang ambag sa bansa sa kanilang ginagawang pagsasakripisyo,” Speaker Romualdez said.

The lawmaker added that through the proposal, the government will be able to help the OFWs in all stages of their cases, starting from the investigation to its resolution.

It was learned that HB 9035 will amend Republic Act (RA) No. 8042, or the “Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995.”

Currently, the LAF and AKYSON Fund can only be used to pay foreign lawyers hired to assist OFWs, filing cases against abusive employers, bail, and other litigation expenses.
