TWO armed suspected drug traffickers were killed in separate gunfights with police officers in Davao City out to arrest them on Wednesday, Police Regional Office 11 (PRO11) Director Brigadier General Benjamin H. Silo Jr. said yesterday.

One of the suspects, the top 7 regional most wanted drug Personality in Southern Mindanao, died in a firefight with undercover officers of the Davao City Police Station 4 Drug Enforcement Team led by Maj. Jake Golez around 12:15 a.m. last Wednesday, the official said.

The gunbattle erupted shortly after the suspect sensed he was dealing with an undercover officer in Malagamot corner Estores Road in Panacan, Davao City, Silo said.

The official said the suspect yielded nearly P90,000 worth of shabu and dried marijuana leaves, the buy-bust money, and a caliber .357 revolver with three spent cartridges and three live ammunition.

Before the shootout, Silo said that the suspect sold some P20,000 worth of cannabis leaves to a poseur. However, the suspect sensed the man he was dealing with was a cop and pulled out his concealed firearm and fired a shot at the lawman but missed.

The suspect then fled on foot before being gunned down in a brief chase by a backup operative.

The other suspect died in a shootout with undercover agents in Purok 20, San Roque in Bgy. Mintal, Tugbok District, Davao City 5:00 p.m. of the same day.

Silo said that local policemen led by Maj. Michael Uyanguren conducted the anti-narcotics operation, which went awry when the suspect got suspicious and tried to shoot an agent who was forced to defend himself.

The suspect died while being taken to a nearby hospital. Confiscated were one cal. .38 revolver with four live ammunition, six plastic sachets of shabu, an improvised glass tooter, and the buy-bust money.

Last weekend, Davao City policemen also gunned down two armed holdup men after they robbed two young female students on their way home.

“We are further stepping up our anti-criminality efforts in the entire Southern Mindanao region in line with our effort to keep the streets safe 24/7 as ordered by Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, General Rodolfo Azurin Jr.,” the PRO11 director said.
