MAKESHIFT dwellings or ‘kubols’ and other illegally-constructed structures have been demolished at Quadrant 2 of the New Bilibid Prison- Maximum Security Compound in Muntinlupa City.

Bureau of Corrections chief Gerard Bantag ordered the removal of these makeshift houses and structures as part of the prison facility’s bid to improve security.

The demolition aimed to clear inmates’ hiding places for unauthorized items like drugs, liquor, and deadly weapons.

According to BuCor, the cleared sections will be transformed into common areas for inmates’ group activities like sports and recreation.

Other camps inside the sprawling prison facility will similarly be cleared of illegal, unauthorized, and makeshift dwellings, BuCor vowed.

“The BuCor administration is geared towards providing the Persons Deprived Liberty (PDL) a wholesome and contraband-free environment,” BuCor said in a statement.

Aside from NBP in Muntinlupa, the other BuCor prison facilities are Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City, the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Oriental Mindoro, Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan, San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City, and the Leyte Regional Prison in Southern Leyte.
