PRC serves hot meals to stranded passengers as TS Kabayan cancels sea trips
THE Philippine Red Cross (PRC) on Monday distributed hot meals to stranded passengers at different ports in Luzon and Visayas following the cancellation of sea trips due to Tropical Storm Kabayan (International Name: Jelawat).
PRC Chairman and CEO Richard “Dick” Gordon assured the passengers that continuous help will be provided, adding: “Marami sa mga kababayan natin ang naantala ang pag-uwi dahil sa bagyo.
Nagpadala kami ng volunteers at food trucks sa nga ports para samahan at mamahagi ng pagkain sa kanila.”
The PRC provided assistance to 46 stranded passengers in Ubay Port in Bohol. A PRC welfare desk was also set up in Surigao Del Sur to provide psychosocial assistance to the affected individuals. Hundreds of stranded passengers in Manila and Surigao Del Sur also received hot meals today.
Chairman Gordon extended his appreciation to both the PRC staff and the volunteers of RC143 for monitoring the provinces in the typhoon’s path, even during the weekends.
“Our RC143 volunteers are on the ground assessing the needs of communities. They are trained to immediately report the situation of each community to our Operations Center for immediate humanitarian assistance,” Gordon added.
PRC Secretary-General, Dr. Gwen Pang said that the prepositioning of assets, mobilization of volunteers, and the provision of food, water, and basic medical care constitute the standard response and rescue efforts of the PRC to reinstate affected individuals’ access to essential necessities amid disruptions.
TS Kabayan made landfall over Manay, Davao Oriental on Monday morning, and prompted the pre-emptive evacuation of almost 10,000 individuals in Surigao Del Sur, Surigao Del Norte, and Cebu.
