Poll violence
TWO motorcycle-riding men shot a car bearing an official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Zamboanga City on Saturday, alarming government authorities.
Lawyer Vidzfar Julie, 51,Sulu provincial election supervisor, was unhurt, but an older brother was hit in the head.
Nasir Amil Asiri, 57, was rushed to the West Metro Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Julie’s wife was also unhurt.
The three were on board a Toyota Fortuner when they were attacked by the suspects.
Reports said the three had just come from the airport and were on their way home to Brgy. Sta. Maria, Zamboanga City.
“No words are enough to condemn this treacherous act of violence against our people,” said Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia.
Garcia, a lawyer, said that “what is more gruesome and unforgivable is when a loved one is caught in the crossfire so to speak,” added Garcia.
Like the poll chairman, we call on the authorities to take immediate action as the May 12, 2025 local and national elections fast approach.
Police and Comelec records show that local elections are “bloodier” than national polls.
Without doubt, the poll violence in Mindanao must cause great concern among the authorities and the ordinary citizens.
