Poll campaign starts
THE 90-day official campaign for national candidates and party-list organizations starts today (February 11).
Local candidates, on the other hand, may start campaigning on March 28, which is 45 days before the May 12 polls.
Considered local bets are those running for district congressmen, governors, vice governors, board members, mayors, vice mayors and councilors.
Aware of the importance of the election, the Philippine National Police (PNP) ordered the conduct of 24-hour checkpoints across the country.
Various quarters, including the ordinary citizens, described the decision of the PNP leadership as “timely.”
The Commission on Elections (Comelec), with the help of partner agencies, is determined to ensure the holding of clean, honest and peaceful elections on May 12.
“Without doubt, the round-the-clock checkpoints will also discourage lawless elements from doing their nefarious activities,” a village official said.
PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said additional policemen will be deployed in identified areas of concern.
“As we approach the mid-term elections,” he said, “the PNP remains steadfast in its duty to uphold peace and security” across the country.
We agree with Marbil when he declared that no political ambition should compromise public safety.
