IT’S just 18 days before the start of the official campaign period for national candidates, including the 10 presidential and nine vice presidential hopefuls, in the May 9 elections.

Under the calendar of activities of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), those running for national positions start campaigning on February 8, which is 90 days before election day.

The campaign period for president, vice president, senator and party-list groups is from February 8 to May 7.

The official campaign period for local candidates, on the other hand, starts on March 25 (Friday), which is 45 days before the May 9 political exercise, according to the poll body.

Considered as local bets are those running for governor, vice governor, provincial board member, mayor, vice mayor, town/city councilor and district representatives.

The presidential bets include ex-Sen. Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Sens. Manny Pacquiao and Panfilo Lacson, Vice President Leni Robredo and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno.

The others are labor leader Leody de Guzman, former presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella, ex-security adviser Norberto Gonzalez, Faisal Mangondato and Jose Montemayor Jr.

The vice presidential bets are Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, Senate President Tito Sotto, Sen. Francis Pangilinan,, Rep. Lito Atienza, Dr. Willie Ong, Walden Bello, Rizalito David, Manny Lopez and Carlos Serapio.

Hopefully, the poll body hits hard at those national and local candidates who post their campaign posters outside the so-called “common poster areas” (CPAs).

CPAs are Comelec-designated public places or private places (with the consent of the owner), where bets may post their propaganda materials during the campaign period.

Dapat lang.
