THE Philippine National Police yesterday acknowledged valid concerns raised by the public regarding the data security of their Forensic Group amid the reported hacking of some government databases.

“Upon learning about this issue, we immediately activated our Data Breach Response Team (DBRT) to swiftly address the matter. The Forensic Group is working closely with the PNP Information Technology Management Service and the Anti-Cybercrime Group to ensure that this issue is given the utmost attention it deserves,” said PNP Public Information Office chief Colonel Jean S. Fajardo.

According to the official, PNP chief General Benjamin C. Acorda Jr. has ordered all concerned PNP units to ensure that their databases will be fully protected from hackers.

“We want to assure the public that we have implemented robust cybersecurity measures and are conducting thorough vulnerability tests to further enhance our defenses against unauthorized access. As of press time, we can confidently state that all databases of the PNP Forensic Group, including DNA CODIS, IBIS, and AFIS, remain secure and unaffected by any breach,” she said.

Col. Fajardo also said they are addressing the concerns raised regarding their Comprehensive Online Recruitment Encrypting System (CORES).

She said in April this year, there was an incident that was initially mistaken for a hack.

However, upon thorough investigation, it was discovered that the issue stemmed from an applicant’s oversight in failing to log out of their account.

“We immediately took steps to address this issue and alleviate any further concerns,” the official said.

The PNP spokesperson likewise emphasized that the PNP leadership deeply appreciates the vigilance of the public in bringing these matters to their attention.

“Rest assured that we are fully committed to staying on top of the situation and that our shared responsibility in combatting threats and ensuring cybersecurity in our digital spaces remains our top priority,” Col. Fajardo said in a statement.
