A ZAMBOANGA City police non-commissioned officer on Friday was recorded as the 76th COVID-19 fatality in the Philippine National Police (PNP).

PNP chief General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar said the 48-year-old Staff Sergeant died on Tuesday due to severe pneumonia and acute respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19.

Citing a report from the PNP Health Service, the PNP chief said that last June 30, the policeman experienced persistent COVID-19 symptoms and was immediately brought to a nearby hospital where he tested positive for the virus during an RT-PCR test.

“I would like to give my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of our police personnel. Lahat po ng tulong na maaaring ibigay ng PNP ay amin pong ipapaabot sa kanyang pamilya,” Eleazar said.

As of Thursday, the PNP-HS headed by Brigadier Gen. Luisito P. Magnaye said it also recorded 139 recoveries among the infected personnel bringing the total recoveries to 27,089.

However, 123 new cases were noted bringing the total cases to 28,625 with 1,460 active cases still being monitored by PNP doctors and nurses.

Eleazar said a total of 47,209 or 21.61 percent of PNP personnel have received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine while 14,205 are now fully vaccinated.
