THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday recorded its 109th COVID-19 fatality: a 37-year old non-commissioned officer from Calabarzon region.

PNP chief, General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar, citing a report from the PNP Health Service said that the 109th fatality with the rank of Police Master Sergeant passed away last Thursday due to pneumonia and acute respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19.

It turned out that last August 28, the cop experienced mild symptoms of COVID-19 and immediately underwent an RT-PCR test which yielded a positive result.

Two days later, he complained of difficulty in breathing and was immediately transferred to a nearby hospital.

After being in confinement for 10 days, the policeman was declared dead by his attending physician around 3 a.m. last September 9.

The cop’s medical records revealed that he is suffering from hypertension and received his 1st dose of vaccine last August 6.

“Taos pusong pakikiramay po ang aking ipinapaabot sa pamilya ng ating pulis na namatay at nangangako po tayo ng anumang tulong sa kanila,” Gen. Eleazar said.

As of Sunday, the PNP-HS headed by Brigadier Gen. Antonio R. Cirujales said they have recorded 159 new recoveries among their infected personnel bringing to 34,203 the number of police officers and men who have fully recovered from the disease since March 2020 and are now back to full duty status.

The PNP-HS is also monitoring 2,6655 ‘active cases’ as of press time. Since March last year, there were already a total of 37,067 PNP personnel who have contracted the virus.

Gen. Eleazar said that to date, there are a total of 117,530 police personnel or 52.77 percent of the PNP’s total strength who are already fully vaccinated while 92,362 or 41.47 percent have already received their 1st dose of the vaccine.

With this, there are only 12,809 PNP personnel or 5.75 percent of the force police who are yet to be inoculated.
