PNP on heightened alert during ‘Simbang Gabi’
ALL Philippine National Police units have been placed on heightened alert to ensure public safety and security during the 9-day series of dawn masses or “Simbang Gabi” leading to the Christmas and New Year festivities, PNP chief General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil said yesterday.
The top cop said uniformed and plainclothes police officers will be guarding the streets particularly roads leading to Catholic churches which are expected to be flooded by a throng of worshippers.
Gen. Marbil has directed all police units to implement comprehensive security measures in coordination with local government units, church officials, and other concerned stakeholders during the period.
“Our priority is to provide a safe and peaceful environment for all devotees participating in this sacred tradition. We have increased police presence in churches and surrounding areas to ensure public safety throughout the Simbang Gabi period,” he said.
The PNP chief said Police Assistance Desks (PADs) will be deployed near churches to assist the public, while foot and mobile patrols will be intensified in strategic areas, including public transport terminals, parking areas, and marketplaces.
Police has also heightened monitoring of crime-prone areas to prevent potential threats, he added.
Devotees have been advised however to remain vigilant, secure their personal belongings, and report any suspicious activities to authorities.
The PNP also has encouraged attendees to arrive early at church venues to avoid overcrowding and comply with security protocols.
In line with the PNP’s “Ligtas Paskuhan 2024” operations, police units nationwide are working closely with local government units, barangay officials, and other law enforcement agencies to respond to any emergencies or untoward incidents.
The PNP remains committed to providing a safe environment for all Filipinos during the holiday season, said PNP spokesperson, Brigadier Gen. Jean S. Fajardo.
For emergencies, the public is urged to call the PNP Hotline or reach out to the nearest police station, the official said.
In Metro Manila, National Capital Region Police Office director Brigadier General Anthony A. Aberin assured local residents that all NCRPO “boots are on the ground” to ensure peace and order during the Simbang Gabi.
The official also committed to lead his men on the ground during the Yuletide Season where they have launched a comprehensive security coverage to protect the public.
He said he has instructed all five NCRPO district directors to flood the streets with competent and motivated police personnel, maximizing police presence and visibility to deter crimes and to provide both local residents and tourists in Metro Manila the feeling of safety and security.
