PNP-IG scores big in counter-terror, anti-crime drive

PNP-IGSCORES of most wanted terrorists and criminals have been neutralized by the Philippine National Police (PNP) this year amid the ‘intelligence packets’ provided by agents of the PNP Intelligence Group, the Journal Group learned yesterday.

Last June 13 alone, a PNP-IG-initiated anti-terror operation in Basilan province resulted in the neutralization of a wanted member of the Abu Sayyaf Group-turned former local barangay captain, a report to PNP chief, General Benjamin C. Acorda Jr. said.

Slain during the counter-terror operation launched by the PNP-IG upon the approval of the PNP Directorate for Intelligence headed by Brigadier Gen. Joe Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. in Sitio Kalang, Barangay Amaloy, Unkaya Pukan was Nurudin Mudallam alias ‘Commander Not.’

The operation was spearheaded by the Regional Intelligence Unit 9 with the help of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), PNP Special Action Force (SAF), Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region Police Regional Office

The PNP-IG said that officers were approaching the house of the target when he opened fire at them prompting the lawmen to retaliate killing the latter on the spot.

Recovered from the possession of the slain suspect were a caliber 5.56 Colt M-16 automatic rifle with three magazines containing a total of 80 pieces of live ammunition.

Muddalan was described as a remnant of an Abu Sayyaf Group led by Furuji Indaman who formed his own terror group while claiming to be a member of both the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Moro National Liberation Front.

A record check showed the suspect used to be the chairman of Bgy. Silangkum in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan who became wanted for his involvement in a number of atrocities against security troops and civilians in the island-province.

They include an ambush on members of the Army’s 32nd Infantry Batttalion in Sitio Tampat in Bgy. Kaili, Albarka on June 25, 2022; harassment of a Marine patrol base in Bgy. Tipo-Tipo proper in 2008; the attack on troops in Sitio Crossing Si Paru in Bgys Kali and Baguindan in Tipo-Tipo municipality which led in the killing of 15 government troops and the wounding of 13 others in 2007.

The PNP-CIDG Region 9 Field Unit took custody of the seized evidence while the body of the slain suspect was brought to the Zamboanga Medical Center in Zamboanga City.

Last June 12, the Regional Intelligence Unit 12 also facilitated the surrender of Said Madidis Akmad, a suspected member of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters-Karialan Faction operating in the provinces of Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat.

On June 5, the PNP-IG also facilitated the surrender of a New People’s Army member in Tigbauan, Iloilo and 25 other rebel supporters in Laguna.

The 20-year-old rebel who yielded in Iloilo also turned over a home-made 12-gauge shotgun with three live ammunition and a hand grenade.

On the same day, 25 NPA sympathizers from Calamba City, Laguna turned themselves over to PNP-IG officers and the local police. The 25 confessed to having been recruited to join the BAYAN-Laguna anti-government protests in Calabarzon region and Metro Manila with the promise they will be getting free house-and-lot.

On June 6, the PNP-IG facilitated the surrender of a 40-year-old active NPA member in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental who confessed to have been involved in a number of attacks on government troops in the province.

The following day, PNP-IG officers also facilitated the surrender of eight NPA members in Sibalom, Antique. A cal. .38 revolver and a rifle grenade was also turned over by one of the surrenderers.

On June 9, PNP-IG officers became involved in the operation to arrest an NPA member wanted for attempted murder and violation of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 in Aroroy, Masbate.

No bail was recommended for the temporary liberty of the suspect identified as Irene Letada.

PNP-IG operatives this month also figured in the arrest of the following: Dennis Loreno,34, a resident of Legazpi City in Albay turned the no. 4 most wanted person in Mimaropa region where he is facing non-bailable cases for rape and rape by sexual assault charges; Arturo Tamayao Jr., the 5th most wanted man in Cagayan Valley where he is facing a non-bailable murder case;

Ageo Alimpuyo, the 8th most wanted person in Western Visayas where he is facing a non-bailable warrant of arrest for murder and violation of the anti-child abuse law; Arnulfo Tankisan, the no. 1 most wanted person in Southern Mindanao where he is facing a non-bailable warrant of arrest for qualified rape;

Danilo Gontina, wanted for a rape case in Abuyog, Leyte but hid in Caloocan City; and Alvin Luis, a wanted murder suspect in Camarines Sur and tagged as the 8th most wanted person in Bicol region.
