STEPPED-UP anti-car theft campaign by the Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group last January led to the recovery of 76 stolen motor vehicles and the arrest of 45 suspected car thieves, PNP-HPG Officer-in-Charge, Brigadier General Eleazar P. Matta said yesterday.

In a report to PNP chief, General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, the official said that among the 76 they recovered last month were 59 Motor Vehicles or 4-wheeled vehicles and 17 motorcycles.

Brig. Gen. Matta said the recovery and arrests were made as a result of 17,185 law enforcement operations they conducted nationwide leading to the arrest of 45 suspects and the filing of 16 criminal charges against them for violation of Republic Act 10883 or the New Anti-Carnapping Act of 2016 which amended the Anti-Carnapping Act of 1972.

The PNP-HPG also jointly conducted a total of 4,417 anti-crime operations with other PNP units and law enforcement agencies last month.

Brig. Gen. Matta said that apart from their major anti-car theft efforts, they also continued to strictly enforce RA 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code across the country from January 1-31 resulting in the impounding of 420 MVs and 2,534 motorcycles for various infractions.

PNP-HPG agents last month also issued 9,857 Temporary Operator’s Permits, 5,895 Ordinance Violation Receipts and 24,883 Traffic Citation Tickets to violators.

Brig. Gen. Matta said their continuing strict enforcement of Presidential Decree 96 or the

‘Anti-Wang-Wang Law’ last month led to the confiscation of one siren, 260 blinkers, 134 horns, 3,205 illegal lights and 79 modified mufflers.

The confiscations were made as the PNP-HPG ensured that sirens and blinkers would be a ‘symbol of authority, not of abuse.’ At the same time, the unit apprehended the drivers of 1,025 vehicles for violating the ‘No Plate, No Travel’ policy. All violators were ticketed.

Brig. Gen. Matta commended the unwavering dedication of his men in upholding road safety and combatting car-related crimes.

“These accomplishments reflect the commitment of the men and women of the Highway Patrol Group in ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike. Our operations are driven by integrity, vigilance, and the pursuit of justice. We will remain steadfast in our mission to rid our roads of criminal elements and keep our highways safe for every Filipino,” the official said.
