PNP COVID death toll now at 121

THE number of police personnel who have died of COVID-19 since March last year rose to 121 on Thursday as the Philippine National Police (PNP) recorded two more fatalities.

The 120th fatality is a 31-year old Police Corporal assigned in a Calabarzon municipal police station who passed away last October 6 at the Philippine General Hospital.

Records from the PNP Health Service showed that the patient died of obstructive shock from pulmonary embolism. The patient was also diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, and was tested positive for COVID-19 infection last September 24.

The 121st fatality is a Police Executive Master Sergeant assigned in a Metro Manila police station, The police non-commissioned officer died last October 5 at the National Kidney Transplant Institute due to COVID -19 critical pneumonia.

The patient was earlier diagnosed with chronic kidney disease stage 5 associated with hyperkalemia, hypertension and was tested positive for the virus last September 28.

“Pinapaabot ko ang pakikiramay ng buong hanay ng kapulisan sa pagpanaw ng dalawa pa nating kasamahan,” Gen. Eleazar said even as he assured the families of the deceased personnel of all death benefits and assistance from the PNP.

SHARP REDUCTION IN COVID-19 CASES RECORDED

The death of the two policemen was announced even as the PNP said it has recorded a sharp decrease in the number of active COVID-19 cases in the 222,000-strong organization over the past 13 days.

Gen. Eleazar said that the PNP-HS recorded only 1,727 active cases among PNP personnel from 2,266 active cases on September 24, or a decrease of 21.31 percent over the past 13 days.

The top cop added that a total of 38,700 PNP personnel have recovered among the 40,548 total confirmed cases in the PNP or a recovery rate of 95.4 percent.

The PNP chief also said that a total of 182,594 or 82.04 percent of their strength are now fully-vaccinated against COVID-19 with 34,286 or 15.41 percent awaiting their 2nd dose.

This leaves only a total of 5,680 or 2.55 of the force still to be vaccinated.

“The national vaccination program is indeed a game changer in the government’s COVID-19 response,” Gen. Eleazar said.
