PNP CONDEMNS VIOLENT MENDIOLA PROTESTERS
THE Philippine National Police leadership on Saturday strongly condemned the acts of violence perpetrated by a group of anti-government protesters on Claro M. Recto Avenue in Manila during the observance of Bonifacio Day which left a group of policemen wounded, one seriously.
In a statement, PNP spokesperson, Brigadier General Jean S. Fajardo said the protest actions led to injuries and the disruption of public order.
“Today’s events underscore the delicate balance the PNP strives to uphold between protecting the rights to free speech and peaceful assembly and ensuring the safety and security of our communities,” the official said.
Initial reports showed that one police officer deployed in the area suffered a serious eye injury and was promptly rushed to a hospital in Manila for medical treatment. Other officers suffered minor abrasions and received immediate first aid from a medical team on-site.
“Our police officers, who are tasked with safeguarding public safety, displayed remarkable restraint and professionalism even as they faced provocation and aggression. Their mission is always clear: to de-escalate tensions, preserve peace, and protect lives,” said Brig. Gen. Fajardo.
“We reaffirm our commitment to upholding every Filipino’s constitutional right to peaceful assembly. However, we cannot and will not tolerate any form of violence that endangers the public or undermines the rule of law. Those responsible for instigating chaos and harming others will be held accountable in accordance with the law,” she added.
The official called anew on everyone to engage in peaceful and meaningful dialogue and to refrain from doing actions that may compromise public safety or disrupt harmony within our communities.
Prior to the incident, National Capital Region Police Office director, Brig. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin said they were fully prepared to commemorate the 161st Birth Anniversary of Gat Andres Bonifacio, the Father of the Philippine Revolution and a national hero who played a pivotal role in the country’s fight for independence.
The official said they deployed a substantial number of Able, Active and Allied police personnel across Metro Manila, including the Reactionary Standby Support Force (RSFF) from the Police Regional Offices 3 and 4-A.
