PNP-CIDG probes murder of Zambo Sur ‘kagawad’

THE Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group has joined the investigation into the murder of a 39-year-old barangay kagawad in Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur last late Friday evening, PNP-CIDG director Brig. Gen. Nicolas D. Torre III said.

According to the official, the Regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit 9 has sent investigators to look into the killing of Michael Verallo, a councilman of Bgy. Upper Dumalinao in Dumalinao municipality 11 p.m. last Friday.

An initial report from the Police Regional Office 9 showed that two unidentified motorcycle-riding men, both wearing black jackets and helmets, attacked the victim who was on his way home from the barangay hall.

The victim was driving his motorbike when the gunmen emerged from a grassy area and repeatedly fired at the unarmed councilman.

Investigators from the Dumalinao Municipal Police Station recovered six spent caliber .45 cartridges and three 9mm pistol casings at the scene of the attack.

The victim suffered 10 gunshot wounds on the head, six on the body and one on the knee and was pronounced dead on the spot.

Torre said investigators from the Zamboanga del Sur CIDG Provincial Field Unit are helping the Dumalinao police identify and arrest the suspects.

As of press time, investigators are interviewing possible witnesses to the crime who could help give justice to the victim.
