PNPPHILIPPINE National Police chief General Benjamin C. Acorda Jr. has commended the Police Regional Office (PRO) 5 in Bicol, headed by Brigadier Gen. Westrimundo D. Obinque, for its accomplishments against illegal drugs.

The Bicol police force’s campaign against illegal drug trafficking and abuse contributes significantly to their effort to win the war on drugs under the administration of President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ R. Marcos Jr., the PNP chief said.

The PNP chief particularly cited the major gains that the police force, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and other law enforcement units nationwide, made against illegal narcotics over the past 12 months.

Both Acorda and PDEA Director General Moro Virgilio M. Lazo expressed their intention to turn the Philippines into a ‘drug-free country’ by going all-out against illegal drug trafficking and abuse, with focus on the rehabilitation of drug dependents.

The Journal Group learned anti-narcotics operations conducted by the PRO5 this year resulted in the arrest of 758 targets and the seizure of over P74 million worth of shabu and marijuana.

“The drug arrests and seizures were the result of our intensified effort to combat the proliferation of illegal drugs in the region amid our steadfast commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of all Bicol residents and visitors,” Brig. Gen. Obinque said.

Two Saturdays ago, PRO5 agents arrested three top drug personalities which resulted in the recovery of around 1.1 kilogram of shabu worth P7.5 million.

The Bicol police director identified the arrested as Dexter Brazal, 49, of Zone 1, Sto. Thomas, Magarao, Camarines Sur; Francisco Noel Obias III, 52, of Zone 2, RJ Village in Bgy. Haring, Canaman, and Raymond Madera, 42, of Dons St., Naga City.

Undercover officers from the PRO5 Regional Drug Enforcement Unit arrested the three during a sting at 105 Flamingo Street in RJ Village around 7:04 p.m. last Saturday.

Recovered from the suspects were 25 grams of shabu and the buy-bust money topped by a marked P500 bill.

A thorough search led to the recovery of 21 plastic sachets containing 1,100 grams of shabu valued at P7,480,000.

Obinque said that over the past few months, they have conducted more than 700 anti-illegal drug operations.

He added that three armed suspects were also killed in clashes with undercover officers during the period.

A total of 1,218 cases for violation of RA 9165 have been filed against the arrested suspects, the PRO5 director said.

Those operations resulted in the confiscation of P67.740 million worth of illegal drugs including nearly 732 kilograms of dried marijuana leaves and more than 10 kilograms of shabu.

Brig. Gen. Obinque said that the Naga City Police Office made the biggest drug seizure with nearly P29.9 million worth of drugs followed by the Masbate Police Provincial Office with nearly P12.8 million confiscated drugs; the Camarines Sur PPO with some P12.5 million recovered drugs; the Albay PPO with around P6.5 million seized drugs; the Camarines Norte PPO with an estimated P6.4 million confiscated drugs; the Catanduanes PPO with around P729,000 worth of recovered drugs; and the Sorsogon PPO accounting for more than P17,000 worth of drugs.
