PNP athletics teams shine in 2023 int’l meet

ATHLETES from the Philippine National Police (PNP) shone in the recently concluded 2023 Philippine Masters Athletics Championships, participated in by different foreign athletics teams in Ilagan, Isabela.

The event held at the Ilagan Sports Complex on Tuesday showed the PNP Athletics Teams led by Colonel Marlou Roy V. Alzate making their mark in the competition, where athletes from Iraq, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand also showed their class.

The PNP team was supervised by Lieutenant Col. Chona D. Panganiban and assistant coach, Police Executive Master Sergeant Alfred Rivera, and Staff Sgt. Eduard Dayo took home 14 golds, 11 silver, and two bronze medals.

The PNP medal garners include Major Angelita Nastor, who bagged the gold in the 4×100 relay event, and Master Sgt. Maricris Gammag who got three gold medals in the javelin, discus, and shot put events.

On the other hand, Master Sgt. Michael Pelaez dominated the long jump and 100-meter events, winning two gold medals and another gold medal in the 4×100 relay event. Senior MSgt. Aaron Jaxen Banatao and PEMS Virgilio Aguila also took the gold in their respective events.

Banatao and Aguila got gold in the 4×100 meter relay, while Banatao also received the bronze medal in the long jump and 100-meter race.

Other members of the PNP team who won either silver or bronze medals in their events were Corporals Jerson Galoso, Francisco Robert, Norman Flores, Eduard Antonio, Jahnzel Udaundo, Felyn Dalida, and Ligaya Dario, and MSgt. Bryan Urayenza.

PNP chief, General Rodolfo S. Azurin Jr. congratulated the policemen-athletes for their latest achievement in the field of sports.

“Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches for their impressive medal haul and for representing the PNP and the country with honor and pride. Their hard work, dedication, and determination have truly paid off, and they have showcased the excellence that the PNP is known for,” Azurin said.
