Pinoys in Bangladesh safe — DMW chief
FILIPINOS in Bangladesh are safe, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac said on Saturday.
Cacdac stated that the DMW’s priority is to ensure the migrant workers’ safety and well-being amid the ongoing unrest in the South Asian country.
“Wala tayong migrant workers office in Bangladesh, but we do have an embassy,” Cacdac said in a news forum in Quezon City on Saturday.
“So far, safe and sound ang around 700 Filipinos in Bangladesh,” he added.
“Ang mga OFW in Bangladesh are mostly skilled workers, technical. And some of them in the hotel sector, hospitality sector. They are safe and sound at this stage and we hope it’s safe that way,” the official explained.
According to Cacdac, no Filipino migrant worker has signified interest in returning home amid the conflict in Bangladesh.
Initial reports said at least 200 people were killed and thousands injured in the protest actions that have rocked Bangladesh since July 18. Protesters are calling for reforms in the quota system in public service.
The system reserves 56 percent of government jobs for state supporters, which, according to the students, is discriminatory. PCO
