PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday underscored the vital role of the Philippine Constitution Association (PHILCONSA) in preserving and protecting democracy in the country.

“In the past sixty-three years, the PHILCONSA has remained the steadfast, vigilant, and uncompromising guardians of our democracy and of our nation,” President Marcos said in his message at the Palace during PHILCONSA’s 63rd Founding Anniversary.

“Despite global uncertainties and geopolitical tensions, the Philippines has remained a bastion of resilience, peace, and stability,” he said.

Despite the rising maritime tensions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) that raise fears of a greater conflict, the Philippines continues to assert its sovereignty, and jurisdiction to protect the integrity of its national territory, the President said.

At the same time, Congress is also working on the passage of several legislations, including the Maritime Zones Bill, which clarifies the geographical extent of maritime domain and the Archipelagic Sea Lanes Bill that seeks to establish ASLs in Philippines’ archipelagic waters and the adjacent territorial sea.

The government also continues to provide adequate social services, ensuring employment opportunities and improving the quality of life for all as we achieve prosperity as a nation, he added.

“But while our economy flourishes, let us remember the fundamental principle that underpins everything—Our Constitution,” the President said, stressing the fundamental law establishes the structure of government, determines the rights of the people, and protects them from abuses.

Founded on September 26, 1961, PHILCONSA is a 130-member non-stock and non-profit civic organization of legal luminaries, business and socio-civic leaders. PCO
