IN a signing ceremony at the UP Manila College of Medicine, in Pedro Gil Street, Manila City, the Philippine Red Cross, represented by its Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon, signed scholarship contracts with 12 medical students from the UP College of Medicine. Each of the 12 medical students met the criteria set by the PRC and UP Manila College of Medicine and will receive annual P300,000 scholarship benefits each, or P150,000 per semester, starting this school year, 2022-2023.

Three scholars will be supported for three years, until they finish the Doctor of Medicine program in 2025, while nine will receive scholarship benefits for five years, until they complete the program in 2027.

In return, when the scholars will have become full-fledged doctors, they will be expected to serve the public through PRC in capacities to be agreed on.

The scholars’ parents witnessed the signing of the scholarship agreements today. The grantees are obliged to meet all the academic requirements of UP Manila and finish the Doctor of Medicine program within the prescribed period.

“The country needs doctors, especially now that the world is experiencing a pandemic. This is true not just in the Philippines but also in other countries,” Gordon said.

The P300,000 annual scholarship benefits will cover tuition, miscellaneous fee, laboratory fees, student fund, book allowance, uniform, Internet access, lodging, living allowance, transportation, health insurance, death and disability insurance, board exam review fee, and application fee to take the medical board, for a maximum of five years.
