FOREIGN Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. led the reopening of the Philippine Embassy in Rabat on Thursday to strengthen its bilateral relations with Morocco.

The Embassy was closed down in the 1990s.

Locsin, in a speech said “after being closed for nearly 30 years, the opening of the Philippine Embassy in the Kingdom of Morocco comes at an opportune moment where both countries can optimally benefit by exploring opportunities for growth in various areas of cooperation, including people-to-people exchange.” He was joined by Director-General Ambassador Fouad Yazourh of Morocco.

The Embassy’s reopening comes within the framework of the Philippine government’s Africa policy, which is aimed at engaging more African countries and exploring potential cooperation on trade and politics, among others.

The Philippines and Morocco established diplomatic relations on April 10, 1975 and later established an embassy in Rabat. However, it was closed in 1986.

In 1990, the embassy was reopened but was shut down again in 1996 due to budgetary constraints.
