PCU, New Era, AMA hurdle rivals
PHILIPPINE Christian University, New Era University and AMA Universities and Colleges hurdled their respective rivals in the NAASCU Season 22 basketball tournament at the Tala Glorrieta Complex in Caloocan City.
The Dolphins outclassed Manuel Luis Quezon University, 78-69; the Hunters toppled Our Lady of Fatima University, 61-55; and the Kings overpowered Holy Angel University, 79-73.
Steven De Castro scattered 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc to lead the Manila-based Dolphins of coach Biboy Simon to victory.
Solomon Itam and Troy Manipolo added 17 points apiece.
Itam also had 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks while Manipolo had seven rebounds and five assists.
Kenneth Obioha chipped in 10 points.
Asi Paul Placido paced the Joshua Nicolas-mentored Stallions with game-high 21 points in almost 34 minutes of action.
Steven Gabriel Diño added 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals while Jaddie Antonio and Sean Julian contributed 10 points each.
Meanwhile, Jared Sevilla and Tristan Luise Tolentino combined for23 points as the Hunters dealt Phoenix their first loss.
Sevilla finished with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting on top of seven rebounds in 22 minutes for the Hunters, who improved to 4-2.
Tolentino added 10 points, followed by Vincent Nablo and Toritseju Adams with eight points each.
..Mamadou Toure tallied a double-double performance of 14 points and 10 rebounds in 29 minutes of action for the Phoenix of coach Ralph Rivera.
Ace Rusell Tiamzon added 10 points and four rebounds in losing effort.
In the third game, AMA leaned on the 1-2 punch of Earl Ceniza and Reed Baclig to beat Holy Angel and barge into the win column.
Ceniza recorded a monster double-double of 18 points and 17 rebounds while Baclig had 18 points and six steals for the Kings of multi-titled coach Mark Herrera.
The Kings also got 14 points from JC Yambao 12 markers and 13 boards from Christian Camay, and seven points and 17 rebounds from Joshua Villamor.
Ramonchito Rodriguez scored a game-high 28 points on top of 11 rebounds for the Angeles City-based Golden Guardians.
David Alfaro added 12 points and five rebounds while Jerlan Manaloto and Noy Capuno had eight points each in a losing effort.
Hanz Perez and Marc Basillo chipped in seven and six points, respectively.
