THE Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) joins the worldwide celebration of the International Chess Day by organizing the PCAP Inter-School chess championship on July 8, 9, 15 and 16.

PCAP president-commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria said top universities and colleges have been invited to participate in the four-day competition aimed at promoting top-level chess among young student-players.

Atty. Elauria said the event is also part of PCAP’s activities to celebrate International Chess Day on July 20.

“We expect to see the best and the brightest young chess players from TMthe country’s leading universities and colleges to participate in the PCAP Inter-School next month,” said Atty. Elauria.

PCAP chairman Michael Angelo Chua, on the other hand, said the PCAP Inter-School will give both the players and their schools “another good opportunity to train in preparation for their respective school leagues.”

Chua, also the team owner of two-time PCAP champion San Juan Predators, said PCAP decided to limit its regular three-conference format to only two conferences this year to give way to this special tournament for young and talented players.

Chua said student-players can also learn a lot by playing in the PCAP-style format of bliz (three minutes plus two seconds increment) and rapid (15 mnutes plus 0 increment) aside from the standard chess being used in school-based competitions.

Both Elauria and Chua stressed the importance of inculcating the values of fair play, sportsmanship and integrity even as student-players.

“Discipline is a hallmark of true professionalism. This is one of the messages that PCAP want to share with student-players through this tournament.”

Aside from the Inter-School Championship next month, PCAP is also set to organize the PCAP Inter-Commercial League in August and the much-awaited PCAP Wesley So Cup in September
“After the PCAP First Conference won by the Pasig Pirates of Mayor Vico Sotto and coach Franco Camillo, we are moving on with more tournaments in the second half of the year,” added Elauria.

PCAP, the country’s first and only professional chess league, was established in 2021 with the Laguna Heroes of PECA president Dr. Fred Paez winning the inaugural All-Filipino crown.

The other champions are the Iloilo Kisela Knights (Season 1, Second Conference) and San Juan Predators (Season 1, Third Conference) in 2021; San Juan Predators (Season 2, First Conference; Pasig Pirates (Season 2, Second Conference) and Pasig Pirates (Season 3, Third Conference) in 2022; and Pasig Pirates (Seasin 3, First Conference) in 2023
Last April, Pasig Pirates defeated Davao Eagles, 11.5-9.5, 11.5-9.5, to capture an unprecedented third straight championship.

Laguna Heroes brought down Negros Kingsmen, 14-7, to clinch third place in the 20-team tournament sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, Ayala Land and PCWorx.
