PCAP: Pirates make it

PASIG Pirates and Camarines Eagles pulled off back-to-back victories over their respective quarterfinal round opponents in the 201 PCAP San Miguel Corporation-Ayala Land chess championships last Wednesday.

Pasig whipped Rizal Towers, 16-5 and 17.5-3.5, in the Northern Division, while Camarines toppled top seed Paralympics, 11-10 and 12-9, in the Southern Division to advance to the semifinals of this season-ending third conference.

GM Darwin Laylo, GM Roland Salvador, David Elorta. Sherily Cua and Rudy Ibanez led the Pirates in beating the Towers in their two-match showdown in blitz and rapid events.

GM Mark Paragua and NM Carlo Lorena carried the fight for the Eagles, who posted a shock upset win over Paralympics despite finishing only eighth in the elimination round.

Joining Pasig in the Northern Division semis are No. 2 seed San Juan Predators, No. 3 Caloocan Load Manna Knights and No. 4 Laguna Heroes.

Also making it to the semis in the Souuthern Division are No. 2 Iloilo Kisela Knights, Lapu-Lapu Naki Warriors and guest team Penang Panthers-Malaysia.

In the semis, it will be Pasig against Caloocan and San Juan against Laguna in the North; and Camarines against Penang and Iloilo against Lapu-Lapu in the South.

San Juan, bannered by GM Oliver Barbosa, IM Rolando Nolte, WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda and IM Ricardo de Guzman, swept Isabela Knight Raiders, 15.5-5.5 and 18-3.

Caloocan slammed the door on Manila Indios Bravos, 10.5-10.5 (0-3), 13-8 and 2-1 in second Armageddon.

Laguna, led by GMs Rogelio Barcenilla Jr. and John Paul Gomez, blanked Davao Eagles, 16-5 and 14.5-6.5.

Barcenilla and Gomez swept all their four matches to lead the Dr.Fred Paez-managed Heroes to an easy victory over the Eagles.

Iloilo, led by GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. and Karl Victor Ochoa, survived Toledo City Trojans, 12-9 and 10.5-10.5 (3-0).

Lapu-Lapu surprised No. 3 seed SinQGpore, 9-12, 13.5-7.5 and 2-1 in Armageddon, while Penang eliminated Negros Kingsmen, 10-11 and 12-9 and 3-0 in Armageddon.

PCAP, the country’s first and only professional chess league, is headed by President-Commissioner Atty.Paul Elauria and Chairman Michael Angelo Chua.

The tournament is sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra.
