STAFF and patients at the Sta. Ana Hospital were traumatized after a 59-year-old patient committed suicide Wednesday night by jumping off the window grill from the fourth floor, directly landing on the ground.

Hospital director Dr. Grace Padilla said all efforts were made to revive the patient to no avail.

It was learned that the patient had been admitted two days prior to the incident for a moderate case of pneumonia.

Padilla said a family member accompanied the patient during his admission but was undecided who will be with the patient on his confinement, although his illness was not COVID-19 and despite an advise from the hospital that someone should stay with him. He also reportedly suffered from anxiety and depression.

Upon receiving the report, Mayor Isko Moreno called on those suffering from depression to be strong and have faith in God.

“Wag kayo bibigay. Pasasaan ba at di nya tayo pababayaan,” Moreno said.

Habang me buhay me pag-asa.

Padilla said the unfortunate incident happened just as the mayor ordered the installation of closed circuit television units in each room for easier monitoring at the nurses’ station.

According to Padilla, the nurse on duty at that time had just checked on the patient and was already administering medicine to another patient in the same ward when he noticed that the ill-fated one was no longer in bed. It was then when the nurse learned that he already jumped to his death.

Moreno and Padilla both expressed their deepest condolences to the family of the said patient.

Padilla said the hospital is conducting its own investigation even as the homicide probers are also already probing into the incident.
