Pasig City holds sway

PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan — Pasig continues to dominate the overall medal standings after the third day of competitions in the 2024 Batang Pinoy National Championships at the Ramon V. Mitra Jr. Sports Complex here Tuesday.

Based on partial and official medal tally, Pasig has already secured 36 golds, 19 silvers, and 30 bronzes.

That’s way, way ahead of Quezon City, which occupies second place with 19 golds, 17 silvers, and 25 bronzes, and defending four-time champion Baguio City, which lags behind in third place with 18 golds, 22 silvers and 21 bronzes.

A distant fourth is Santa Rosa City, Laguna with 14 golds, 11 silvers and four bronzes, followed by Davao in fifth place with 13 golds, 10 silvers and seven bronzes.

Pasig’s strong showing in the medal race in the event organized by the Philippine Sports Commission was boosted by Haylee Garcia, who bagged the five gold medals in the FIG Senior – women’s artistic gymnastics.

Garcia won in the individual all-around, balance beam, floor exercise, uneven bars and vault.

Pasig City archers Princess Khyra Ramirez and Mariano Matteo Medina also hit th bulls’ eye by nailing three gold medals each.

Ramirez surpassed her previous two-gold medal haul, claiming three in this Batang Pinoy girls 15-under edition.

Arnis also produced a gold medal for Pasig City with Jamie Ysabella Mojica and Cedrick James Velasquez ruling their respective events.

Mojica bested Lapu-Lapu City’s Athena Kate Sapio and Juscian Mayp Emia of Pasig City in cadet girls’ non-traditional individual double weapons.

Velasquez, on the other hand, defeated Nilo Medel, Jr of Iligan City and Jaycee Rein Oning of Baguio Cityin the cadet boys’ non-traditional individual double weapons.

In the pencak silat, Aklan captured four gold medals in the junior elite boys and girls at the Robinsons Palawan – Back entrance.

Danica Jane Rebanio, Mary Chantal Rain Jizmundo, Kent Terence Berlandino, Kevin Unilongo claimed gold medals in their respective events.

In athletics, Ormoc City ruled the boys/girls 16-under 4x400m universal relay at the RVM Sports Complex-track oval.

Bacolod City notched the gold medal in the men’s and womens’ under-18 4×400-meter.

Over at the RVM pool,Arvin Taguinota of Pasig and Sophia Rose Garra of Malabon failed to clinch their fourth straight golds each.

Taguinota, the most bemedalled athlete in last year’s Batang Pinoy Nationals held at the Teofilo Yldefonso pool in Manila, lost by an eye-blink in the boys 12 to 13-year-old 100-meter butterfly race to General Santos City’s Christian Isaiah Lagnason, who won in 1:02.35 to the former’s 1:02.55.

Garra, the top pick in the girls 12 to 13-year-old 100-meter breaststroke, also struggled and was relegated to fourth place (2:59.89) in the event won by Baguio City’s Jan Eowyn Caruncho in 2:54.93.

Joining the ranks of triple gold medalists was Naga’s Albert Jose Amaro II, who set a new meet record in winning the 16 to 17-year-old boys in 24.32 seconds, surpassing his own previous mark of 24.53 last year.
