Paranaque City explosion a self-harm incident – PNP
THE Philippine National Police yesterday said that an explosion that occurred outside the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 in Parañque City was an unfortunate self-harm accident and not connected with any criminal or terror activity.
“The Philippine National Police would like to clarify speculations regarding an explosion that occurred over the past weekend, causing injury to a homeless individual in Paranaque City. The incident was not a result of any criminal activity, but rather an unfortunate self-harm,” said PNP Public Information Office chief Colonel Jean S. Fajardo.
The official said that investigators from the PNP Aviation Security Group promptly secured the scene of the incident along Sucat Road, Ninoy Aquino Avenue, Parañaque City at around 2:45 p.m. last Saturday.
After a thorough inspection of the site, no evidence of explosive materials was discovered, she said.
Col. Fajardo said the investigation showed that the injuries sustained by the 64-year-old victim were the result of an explosion caused by his own actions.
“It appears that the individual was attempting to open a pressurized vape canister by applying heat, which unfortunately led to the explosion,” she explained.
“We would like to emphasize that this incident is not connected in any way to the recent alert issued by civil aviation authorities at a regional airport. The PNP continues to ensure the safety and security of all citizens and will provide updates as necessary,” Col. Fajardo added.
Earlier, NAIA authorities announced the arrest of a suspect in the hurling of a Molotov cocktail at the open parking of NAIA Terminal 3 last September 23 which damaged three parked motor vehicles.
Renieldo dela Peña Perez alias ‘Bolayog’ was arrested five days after the incident following a tip from informants.
Members of the Terminal 3 MIAA Terminal Police Section led by Airport Police Captain Froilan Sanchez arrested the accused near the exit of the Terminal 3 open parking area.
