P46-M smuggled ‘ukay-ukay’ seized in Meycauayan, 2 Chinese nationals arrested
AN anti-smuggling operation conducted by the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) in Meycauayan City, Bulacan on Wednesday led to the arrest of two Chinese nationals and the seizure of an estimated P46 million worth of smuggled used clothing or ‘ukay-ukay’ being sold in different parts of the country, a report to PNP chief General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil said.
Police Regional Office 3 (PRO3) director Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan identified the arrested suspects as alias “Fan Shaoqing, 40, a warehouse checker; and warehouse manager alias “Jiawei Zhang,” 33, both of Sta. Cruz, Manila.
The duo were arrested during the implementation of a search warrant at a warehouse in Industrial Park, Bgy. Libtong, Mecauayan City.
The arrested Chinese nationals are facing charges for violation of Republic Act 4653 or An Act Prohibiting the Commercial Importation of Textile Articles Commonly Known as Used Clothing and Rags .
The suspects’ passports and identification cards were also confiscated by the CIDG Region 3.
Members of the CIDG Regional Field Unit 3, with the assistance of the Police Regional Office 3 and the Bulacan Police Provincial Office confiscated the contraband during two separate operations targeting illegal warehouses in Meycauayan City, said PNP-CIDG director Brig. Gen. Nicolas D. Torre III.
Torre said that during the operation, his men seized one Isuzu truck being used to transport the smuggled goods, assorted business documents and 23,614 bundles of assorted used imported clothing.
“Ang mga ganitong operasyon ay patunay ng aming dedikasyon sa paglaban sa mga krimen na sumisira sa ekonomiya ng bansa. Patuloy kaming magbabantay upang masiguro ang kaligtasan at kapakanan ng bawat Pilipino,” said Torre.
