OFW death in Kuwait
THE billions of dollar remittances of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), many of them women, remain a pillar of the Philippine economy.
Many Filipinos still prefer to work overseas, notably in the United States and other Western countries, where they receive higher pay.
But the government is doing everything to create more high-paying jobs in the country to encourage our workers ro just stay home.
While trying to generate enough local quality jobs, the authorities ought to ensure the safety, health and well-being of our migrant workers.
That’s why we cannot blame Rep. Rufus Rodriguez for calling a congressional inquiry into the death of a female OFW in Kuwait.
A congressaman from Cagayan de Oro City, Rodriguez said his constituent Dafnie Nacalaban died under “suspicious circumstances.”
Rodriguez said the decomposed body of Nacalaban was found in the yard of her employer last December after she was reported missing in October.
Kuwaiti authorities took into custody the employer, but Rodriguez wants Kuwait to conduct an exhaustive investigation of Dafnie’s death.
